Alexandra and I have previously worked together before on the commercial side of things at Royal Coffee, but this time reached out for personal work: maternity photos with her husband Michael and their senior pup Pablo. From her intake form: “Lindsey! You’re an absolute wizard at making people comfortable on camera and I would be thrilled to work with you on our maternity shoot!”

We met at Muir Beach for sunset, but were classically served a foggy Bay Area evening—actually getting a sunset is so rare here. Alexandra had told me she and her husband Michael would need direction as they’re both awkward in front of the camera. I prefer not to “pose” my couples, but to set scenes for them to sink into and allow them to be themselves and interact naturally. We started on a blanket for a picnic vibe, which I find is a good way to ease in. As the evening unfolded we played with Pablo at the water’s edge, allowing for playful moments and candid interactions. Later, by positioning them amongst the rocky landscape we created a variety of scenes to capture their maternity photos.
